Prioritizing Issues

There is a need for this government and for that any accountable and responsible government to put in place priority measures in our sustainable development objectives.

There has to be a sense of prioritizing issues of national development, in line with the spirit of our newly found democratic dispensation.

We won the battle for ousting a repressive and very corrupt dictatorship, but the war to establish a progressive democracy is far from over. The dictator is in exile along with some members of his cartel, but their shadows are still here.

These shadows cannot be banished unless and until some of their actions are brought to light. The new government has to set the pace in the fight towards establishing a just society and putting priorities on matters of sustainable national development should be on the agenda of this new government

Breaking away with records of the past: the 22 years of dictatorship will not be easy as many people might expect as it left a huge scar on the conscience of the nation, which clearly illustrate the rationale behind setting up of reconciliation and justice systems as the TRRC among others meant to keep our beloved country together in the spirit of peace and unity.

However, the Barrow led government must also be seen to follow and practice some of the best practices for any democratic governance system as principles on transparency, accountability and probity.

This further entails that all appointments in various government positions, including ministers, permanent secretaries, director among others follow the set down rules and regulations.

The issue of asset declaration by all government officials must also be respected by even the president and the vice president as it’s done in most countries before assuming power.

Accountable and responsible governance system is the hallmark of new democratic dispensations across the globe, including Africa despite our being declare as centuries backwards from achieving the desire level of development and civility when compared to other continents such as Europe, America and others.

The government must be seen to be accountable, transparent and responsible to people of the country and the world media plays a leading role in such matters, through the use of their pens and other mechanisms for getting the government at the door step of everyone regardless of our political affiliation.

For our case, despite different and diverging opinions as to the fate of the former president Yahya Jammeh, many are of the opinion that he should be extradited and brought to face justice back home for the crimes he allegedly committed during his watch as president for the past 22 years.

Others are of the opinion that, he should be let go free or be given a cooling period as the country is still going through transition.
