Japanese government through the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with Gambia’s Ministry of Trade Industry Regional Integration and Employment have launched a new project called Do-nou Technology aimed at creating employment opportunities for young people.
Held at Sunset hotel in Kotu, the project targets to create and promote employment opportunities for youth through infrastructural skill work, training and entrepreneurship targeting Gambian youth between the ages of 18 and 35 years.
Mamdi Dampha, representative from the Ministry of Trade said the project is a year project funded by the Japanese government to train young people.
According to him, the project gives specific focus on employment creation in infrastructure construction works which, he said can provide a large number of employment opportunities immediately for both skilled and unskilled youth.
He urged government to take the leading role by providing even small contracts to the new Do-nou Technology and encourage youth to take over to provide required skills and support them to establish.
Fanding Kinteh, national project coordinator said the rate of unemployment in The Gambia is high and believes that the training would be of great benefit to both skilled and unskilled young people.
According to him, the project would be in connection with infrastructure which, he said directly contributes to agriculture, tourism and fishery sectors, promote the use of locally available materials.
John Kipyegon, a representative from Community Road Empowerment (CORE) presenting on the construction work of Do-nou Technology said CORE contributes in empowering communities to solve their own problems.
He said Do-nou Technology in Japanese is gunny bag which involves packaging appropriate soils in the bag.
He said the Do-nou Technology can be used as emergency technique, saying local materials are available in rural areas.
