The U.S. Embassy in Banjul commends the government of The Gambia for launching the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC). The establishment of this commission marks an important milestone for The Gambia and its people.
We echo President Adama Barrow’s statement that “there is a crucial need to put the victims at the center of the process.” We believe advocacy for victims, especially women, youth, and those in marginalized communities, is an important part of the democratic process and of ensuring accountability and justice.
The U.S. supports the TRRC’s goals of encouraging healing for victims and victims’ families and continuing to implement reforms that will help prevent future abuses. The United States and The Gambia share long-standing ties and we look forward to continuing to work together to promote democracy and governance, respect for human rights, and economic and social development.
