The Serekunda derby game between Serekunda East and West, on Sunday, was marred by controversy after one of the assistant referees had a stone thrown on his head by a fan believed to be Serekunda West supporter, leaving central referee Maudo Jallow to end the game prematurely after a 2-0 score-line in favour of Serekunda East.
East beat 10-man West team as Ablie Manneh scored both goals in the 76th and 85th minutes respectively in an encounter played at the Serekunda West mini stadium.
The controversy started after central referee Maudo Jallow awarded a penalty to the Serekunda East team with an opportunity to extend their lead to 3-0, but the game was put on hold for a while as the assistant referee was receiving treatment for about 4 minutes in added time while lying down unconscious.
The central referee Maudo Jallow blew the final whistle after the assistant referee finished receiving treatment for what is believed to be for security reason.
Soon after bringing the match to a halt, some section of the Serekunda West fans started throwing stones to players and supporters of the winners.
Serekunda East progressed to the quarterfinal of the tournament as a result of victory, while Serekunda West and Sanyang have eliminated in group D.
In the day’s other fixture, Banjul ran out 1-0 winners over Sanyang, Gunjur also cruised to a 1-0 victory over Brikama while Lamin had the better of Brufut with a 2-1 win.
