Kiang Speaks about Citizenship

The people ‘s  of  Kiang has spoke on  how one could acquire Gambian document and raised concern over none-Gambians acquiring Gambian documents, describing it as a called for concern.

The communities made the remarks at the ongoing nationwide public consultation of the Constitutional Review Commission.

The country is verge reviewing and drafting of a new constitution which is expected to end in 2019.

“We are concern about how some foreigners acquire the country’s national documents,” they said. They added: “We want you people to thoroughly explain to Gambians how to become a citizen of The Gambia.”

Alhaji Demba Sanyang, chief of Kiang Central, described the consultation as a historic one for the country saying it is first of its kind.

He said protection of the national document should be concern for all Gambians, whiles many at Sankandi blamed the ex-president being the cause of this issue in the country

But clarifying the citizenship to these communities, Ansumana Yarbo said: “there are four types of citizenship namely by Birth, Naturalization, Decent and Registration.”

He added: “On the issues of Non-Gambians who migrated to The Gambia and had children born and raised in and went through the school system in The Gambia, such children should be regarded as Gambians according to the country’s current Constitution.”
