Sheriff Muhammed Kijera, chairman of Victim Centre has urged Barrow-led government to explain the issue of reparation and Amnesty -saying “many victims lack proper understanding about the matters”.
“Reparation as long as the victims are concerned is financial compensation, which is a big no. since I think reparation should base on need assessment through recognizing the circumstance of the individual victim as not all of them would share the same circumstance,” he said.
He then added: “They all have unique circumstances that need to be clearly identify as some of them might benefit from financial compensation while others deserves to have rehabilitation so as to get their health restored.
According to him, some victims are currently going through serious medical condition and they need medical support, adding some need to be reinstated to their works.
He also said as far as reparation is specify in the Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission other than that it is not clearly defined to what forms of reparation will be given to the victims.
“Government should initiate massive sensitization to raise awareness pertaining to reparation process and enlighten the masses regarding the prosecution matters because most of the victims are confused about that,” he said.
He called on the government to explain the type of perpetrators entitled to Amnesty and who are not, and asked “whether there will be any successor institution after the mandate of the TRRC to be responsible of the implementation of the TRRC recommendations.”
