Sami Kantora Women Charitable Association (SKWA) in partnership with the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) have sensitized youth and women of Sami district on child marriage , drug abuses, and prostitution at Semega Janneh hall.
It was aim at enlightening the participants on the consequences of illicit drugs, prostitution and early marriage.
Addressing the gathering Fanta Fatty, President of SKWA said: “Mainly, women spent more time at the homes than men because they [men] always go out for in search of foods for the family; so, we deem it necessary to enlighten the women so as to protect their children from drug usage early marriage and prostitution.”
She lambasted boys whom go by using stealing and drugging in the pretext of lack of money to pay their school fees, saying “it is bogus excuse because Gambian education is free from grade twelve downward.”
“Even teenagers are now turning to be night workers. This attitude is not good for them because if they got pregnated their mother will suffer on caring them as well as their babies because they are too young for pregnancy” she said.
Lamin Gassama, DLEAG director of intelligence and international cooperation said the impact of drug abuse, trafficking of illicit drug fall enormous financial loss on families and sometimes loss of lives.
He said: “Sometime when an arrest is made, mothers will constantly be moving between stations, court and prison showing concern to their children.”
According to him, in order to put an end to these menace then sensitizing the masses should encourage.
He said: “We will not leave any stone un turn in our interdiction process, and we call on the public to report drug related matters to law enforcement agencies as police officers cannot be everywhere at once.”
Musa Saidy, adviser for SKWA described the forum as relevant, saying no country can develop in the absent of youth; therefore, educating the masses on the well-being of youth is a step on the right direction.
