The chair of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission has promised that the Truth Commission will investigate and establish the truth about the death of Deyda Hydara.
Dr. Baba Galleh Jallow told the journalists and civil society organizations during the launch of the Media Council and 14 year’s Anniversary of Deyda Hydara held at Djembe Hotel in Kololi.
He said: “I want to assure the Gambia Press Union and Gambian public that the TRRC will leave no stone unturned in order to investigate and establish the truth about Deyda’s assassination to accord justice to his family and Gambian people.”
The Gambia government has established a Truth Commission mandated to investigate all human rights crimes and violations occurred under ex-president Yahya Jammeh.
The commission is due to start hearing on January 7, 2019; and Dr Jallow assured the commitment of the Commission to working with Gambians to discover the remaining truth of the late Deyda.
He then added that: “I want to take this opportunity to reassure the Gambia Press Union, the general public and Deyda’s family that the TRRC stand ready to work with the Gambian people to discover the remaining truth of Deyda Hydara.”
He described the Truth Commission as totally impartial and independent saying “we will remain total impartial and independent.”
Deyda was murdered in December 2004, while returning from work at his Local Newspaper (The Point) by unknown gunmen believed to be part of the hit squat of former president Yahya Jammeh.
However, The Gambia government has been urged to compensate the family of Deyda Hydara after a landmark ruling, giving in favor to the Hydara family at the Economic Community of West African States Court in Abuja Nigeria.
