North Bank Region (NBR) Regional Disaster Management Committee has called for humanitarian assistance for 4674 people affected.
The disaster office presented copies of Community Action Plan and Contingency Plan to enhance disaster risk reduction in the region.
Ebrima KS Dampha, governor of NBR underscored the important for the committee to embark on vigorous resources mobilization to respond to the need of affected families by flashflood and windstorm during 2018.
Dampha was speaking during a reflection meeting of 2018 disasters and types of humanitarian respond provided by National Disaster Management Agency NDMA and other institutions and NGOs.
He expressed shock that going by records from regional disaster office in Kerewan, that during the year under review, “no single support was provided to displace families.”
He challenged Kerewan Area Council to provide support to most affected families hardly affected by natural disasters.
He called on citizens of the region within the country and outside to support in resource mobilization to enhance timely humanitarian assistance to people.
Momodou BK Ceesay, Regional Disaster Management Coordinator, disclosed that 535 households and with a total number of 4,674peoples was affected.
He also disclosed that the greatest challenges posed by his office are the inability to respond to disasters, due to lack of support from partners and institutions.
He acknowledged the support of World Food Program for supporting the region Community Action Plan for disaster hotspot areas in Farafenni, Kerewan and Barra and also for build the capacity of district management committees on contingency planning for Jokadou,
Meanwhile, the European Union is currently supporting a year’s contingency plan on disaster risk reduction for Central Baddibou and Sabach Sanjal districts with a the theme: Saving Lives, Changing Lives and putting people at the centre.
He commended Kerewan Area Council for supporting his office on data collection, noting that the support has enable them to come up with comprehensive data that can help partners and stakeholders in decision making to facilitate humanitarian respond.
