A handful number of vendors within the greater Banjul area have expressed their concern over lack of storage facilities at the major markets to preserve their produces from getting spoil.
They expressed the concern to the Voice yesterday as this reporter went out and about to sound their (vendors) reactions.
Fatou Njie, a fish seller at Bakoteh market, said she face difficulty because her fish got spoil when it is not buy during the day, adding that they have no place to preserve their products
She said the Ice Plant they have at the market is not enough for all the vendors and it is useless went there is insufficiency electricity supply because the Ice block they will provide can’t protect their fish for the next day.
Binta Cham, vegetable seller at Serekunda market said: “lack of proper storage facilities at the markets has become a major challenge for the market vendors because you will not know where to keep your product went the condition of the market not on your side.”
Mariama Sambou, Okra seller at Serekunda market also expressed in dismay as she asked the Kanifing Municipal Council the reasons of them paying daily taxes to the council with no proper storage facility for their products.
She said: “This is the right time for KMC to make good use of tax payer’s money and build a good storage facility for the market vendors.”
Kemo Jaiteh said that the issue of the storage facilities at the markets needs to be put into the consideration to ease their lights.
Jankey Jammeh, vegetable grower has call on the government of the Gambia to banner the other foreign garden products for entering to the country until the Gambian products finish at the market if not it will make market difficult and the prize of the basic commodities will be high and that affect our customers.
Lamin Sanyang said the new government should put his/ her eyes on the situation of the markets across the country because it is another income area of the government in which the vendors will pay their duties to the KMC, BCC, and Area councils across the country for the betterment of the country economy.
