Vendors at the Coastal Road have expressed their dismay over short of toilets in their market and blamed Brikama Area Council.
Speaking to The Voice newspaper Mam Saho, a fish seller said toilet is one of the major problems in the market and that she walks far for easing herself, adding it causes her profit to go low.
“We always pay our duties each and every blessed day and we don’t know what Brikama Area Council use the money for’’ adding that they always complaint this toilet issue to them (Area Council) but whenever we do so the Area Council keeps on promising us without any result,” she said.
As she blamed the council for the lack of toilet, she urges the council to fulfill its promise.
Olimatou Ceesay, a seller also said: “I sometimes go far behind the old wood seller’s backyard to urinate but for other purpose of comfort zone, I need to keep it to myself.”
According to her, they have launched series of complaint to Brikama Area Council for the construction of toilet but added that nothing has been done by the council.
She challenged the council to come to their aid by constructing a toilet for them saying “we are tired of paying our money without knowing what it is used for.”
Babucarr Sallah, a butcher describes the situation as an insult to each and every individual at the Coastal-Road Market because if you eat then you have the obligation to use and clean yourself whenever it’s necessary.
He then said that: “I sometimes go to compounds that are near to the market if possible because not everybody welcomes a stranger in their compound.”
Toilet is one major problem at Coastal-Road Market and Brikama Area Council should be blamed because we always pay our tax in the market, he added.
Dodou Sillah, a cosmetologist and Olimatou Sanneh, a vegetable seller both expressed dismay over the issue and appealed for immediate help from the council to provide for them a toilet.
“The backyard is so bad and the smell leads to air pollution which can give serious illness to people around the area. She urges the Area Council to response immediately to their plight, Olimatou said.
Tapha Gassama, also described the backyard as a hell of bad smell, adding that there are plenty of shops at the backyard but people don’t want to rent them because of the huge garbage, urines and other stuffs that makes the placed unpleasant for shopping.
He then said: “we are guided and protected by God, if not of His Mercy, even the placed the fishmongers keeps their fish is full of garbage, urine and other stuffs,” and urges the council to take up responsibilities to help construct the toilet for them to live in a healthy environment.
