At least fifty eight new lawyers have been called to the Gambia Bar Association. These lawyers include- Gambians, Ghanaians, Nigerians, Cameroonians, Rwandese, and South Africans.
This marked the seventh edition of its kind since the establishment of the Bar in 1873 and 275 lawyers had been called to The Gambia Bar Association.
Abubacarr Tambedou, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice said that: “the legal field is not a field for the dishonest, lazy and incompetent,” then called on the new lawyers to uphold to the Rule of Law and thus building public confidence in the administration of justice.
“Through your profession you may be called upon to take on other people’s problems as your own is to do everything within your legal power to solve them. You are to be the voice of the voiceless and to ensure justice for the less privilege,” he added.
Chief Justice, Assan Jallow also said that The Gambia Bar has among it plans an institution for the process of continuous education of it members that can only bring out of the worth put to the value of the legal profession and to the quality of legal fraternity itself.
He then said: “Honorable practices have rewards, a reward for personal success and that of your family but also for your community with pro bono work for the poor and the needy.”
Justice Jallow described the law profession as knowledge that give lawyers flexibility to assist their community in varieties of ways through legal advices and many other ways.
Representing for President Adama Barrow, Hadrameh Sidibeh, Minister of Youth and Sports said that: “the government will continue to create judiciary that is easily accessible.”
Meanwhile, some newly lawyers were certified and among them were Kumba Mboge, who was awarded as the most outstanding student.
