The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced plan to launching a campaign against cervical cancer some time in this year in the country.
This announcement was made by the minister of health and social welfare during the launch of meningitis held in Brikama over the weekend.
Dr. Isatou Touray called for collective effort to fighting the diseases a in the country saying despite the incurability of one can be safe from having once she takes vaccination.
“There will be another vaccination in the country where girl’s cervical cancer – which you know it, cannot be cure but if you take the vaccination may you, can be safe from having it,” she said.
She assured her ministry’s effort to ensuring Gambians attained to affordable health in the country while urged both men and women to take their children’s during immunization campaign in the country.
Dawda Sowe- President Expanded Program on Immunization described cervical cancers one of the second leading cancers in women across the world and that The Gambia has been the first country in the sub-Saharan Africa that introduced the human papilloma vaccine (HPV.), adding The Gambia is among the countries in the sub-Saharan Africa that introduce the human papilloma vaccine.
He said: “We can proudly say in the third quarter of this year we will countrywide for the prevention of cervical cancer. All girls living around the country will have the opportunity to be immunized with the PHV vaccination so that they are protected against cervical cancer.”
However, he also revealed saying that research showed that liver cancer is one of the leading causes of death and disability around the world.
“The Gambia is one of the first country I can say around the world that introduce the hepatitis B vaccination and we can proudly say all children under the age of 30 years in this country was probably have received at least a single dose of hepatitis B vaccine and it is paying diffident at the moment,” he said.
