The ongoing tussle between the United Democratic Party (UDP) incoming and outgoing West Coast Regional executives on the issue of who should occupy the party’s regional bureau in Brikama. The crisis has deepened as one of the incoming executives was accused of breaking the door of the bureau.
Abdou Darboe, UDP West Coast Region Vice chairman was accused of breaking the door of the bureau in the absence of the outgoing executives. The source of the information stated that the outgoing executives reported the matter to the Brikama Police Station and the police are currently handling the matters.
Lamin Jatta, the outgoing Vice chairman of the West Coast Region said that he cannot comment on the issue as at now.
When contacted Alimameh Fanding Taal, the spokesperson of UDP explained that the new executives of the region has been very patience and have written about the matter that since elections of the new executives, the outgoing executives had refused to vacate the office.
He then explained that the matter has been reported to the National Executives and the advice that was given was to inform the office of the Inspector General of Police about this unacceptable behavior of the outgoing executives.
He added that: “As a civilian in this matter, every Gambian is entitled to resorting to self help where another Gambian is trying to interference with the exercise of your rights. So, as far as we are concerned the outgoing executives have neither mandate nor authority of whatsoever to occupy the premises of the UDP,”
He noted that the incoming executives have been trying to end the situation with a meeting, but the party is united in their recognition of the new executives that were elected in the last Congress in Brikama in November last year.
When asked about whether he is aware that the matter is currently with the police, Taal responded that if there are any police issues, the people should allow the police to do their investigations.
“We don’t accept the behavior of anybody who called himself a member of UDP to behave like this, but if there is anything I think the media and all Gambians should allow the police to do their work, and when they have finalized their work they will give us the full report,” Taal, a lawyer cum politician noted.
