Brikama Kabafita Lower Basic School in Kombo North District, West Coast Region on Monday March 11 celebrated Common Wealth Day, held in the school ground; funded and organized by the school ex-students.
The students characterized the celebration through cultural dance and songs of various ethnic groups in the country to entertain and remind the masses on the country’s cultural heritage.
In her opening remarked, Madam Serra Darboe, heads mistress of KLBS lauded the ex- students for recognizing her school and for celebrating the important day with the children.
She used the opportunity to call on both the former and current students to maintain unity and avoid all forms of tribalism to ensure they attain the sustainable development goal they are yearning for on daily basis while expressed gratitude to all and sundry for contributing on the success of the commemoration.
Ebrima Kuyateh who acted as the head of state during the celebration commended the gathering for attending the remarkable day in the institution. He described March 11 as very important day for Common Wealth member states.
“This day promotes cooperation within the 54 member state to ensure common benefits,” he said.
Musa Ngum, who acted as the secretary general for Common Wealth said this day will avail the students to observe different cultures in the school. “Therefore, it’s vital for both the ex-students as well as the current students,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the ex- student, Alieu Darboe described Common Wealth as part of recognizing the efforts of humanity in promoting democracy, rule of law, good governance and better survival for everyone.
“We [ex- students] have been partaking in the Common Wealth celebration but in the history of Kabafita and the Gambia this is first of its kind where the ex-students come to celebrate the day with the people of their alma mater,” he said.
He added: “This is to send a signal that we are ready to work with everyone in Kabafita and the entire Kombo North.”
Meanwhile, he said to recognize the effort of promoting development and humanity is essential therefore; the ex- student deems it necessary to help the school in such celebration.
He advised the student to maintain discipline and respect their education while called on every ex- student of the school to contribute on the development of their alma mater.
