In their fight to combat human trafficking in The Gambia, the Network of Girls Against Human Trafficking in collaboration with the Office of the Lord Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Wednesday engage Stakeholders on a sensitization forum on the theme. “Human Trafficking: The Gambian Story” held at the Council’s Chambers in Kanifing.
Ndey Kumba Demba Network of Girls Against Human Trafficking (NOGAHT) said the network consist of victims of human trafficking and one of their objective is to raise awareness on human trafficking to ensure people don’t fall victim of trafficking and how to integrate victims in the society. She said the role of stakeholders and the immigration department plays a crucial role in ensuring they secure more prosecution. She calls on the authorities to join them in their fight to end trafficking adding that, human trafficking is a complex issue which needs support to combat it.
Fatou Jange President of the Network of Girls Against Human Trafficking, who is also a victim of trafficking narrate the condition which let her join the route to Kuwait. “I know my Mom when I have 22 years because I was adopted. I never knew my mom. When I heard of the journey, I decided to go to help my siblings to go to school because of the conditions they were in. She narrates.
She said she was denied of her rights as human and was held under detention and subjected to all forms of ill treatment. “What I go through, and what I see, I don’t want anyone to go through it. Sometimes I am traumatize. I have too much stress. We want to stop all of this. She said
Jenge who graduated from the University of The Gambia said, she is committed to fight against human trafficking whiles recalling her situations. She calls on government to support them in their fight against human trafficking.
Human Trafficking is a trade in people especially women and children. The international Labour Organization (ILO) has reported that child workers, minorities, and irregular migrants are considerable risk of more extreme forms of exploitation. Human trafficking is consider to be a crime against humanity.
