The Gambia Union of Theatre (GAMUT) in collaboration with the National Center For Arts and Culture (NCAC) Tuesday announced their readiness to celebrate this year World Theatre and Drama Day slated for 27th March, 2018.
Celebration of World Drama and Theatre Day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute. Since 1962 the day has been celebrated not only by the International Theatre Institute but all over where there are International Theatre Institute members, theatre professionals and practitioners, theatre associations and universities where theatre is studying. The day is also used to celebrate the importance of theatre in the nation, lovers of theatre across the world and as well as its impact in the nation building.
Since the commemoration of the World Theatre Day in 1962 The Gambia theatre union has celebrated it about five times on their own but now collaborating with the National Center for Arts and Culture for the first time to joined the rest of the world in this year’s celebration.
Hassoum Ceesay, Acting Director General of NCAC highlighted on importance of theatre and drama to the nations. He outlined amongst its importance in term of politics, country economy, employment and job creation, governance and so on. He said in the past the union celebrated the day within themselves to complement the work of NCAC but this year “GAMUT will celebrate in collaboration with NCAC and general public that are interested in theatre and drama.”
Matty Jobe, Performing Arts officer at NCAC gave a deep background of theatre. She said theatre is broad with large impacts as it serves as a wake-up call for governments, politicians, and individuals through direct and indirect ways. She elaborated more on this year celebration which will be celebrated in collaboration with NCAC as it is meant to celebrate theatre lovers, practitioners, and fans among others.
Sainey Ceesay-Jammeh, Marketing Manager urged the Gambia Union of Theatre to make quality their priority. She said theatre is a new market for the country and with quality works the practitioners have nothing to fear about.
She also called on general public to joined NCAC and GAMUT for this unique day slated for Wednesday, 27th March.
Mam Demba Ceesay of GAMUT and other members of the union expressed delight on the collaboration and also dilated on the outlined activities for the celebration.
