Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland, a German based charity organization has donated D3 Million to Sukuta Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School for the library in the school.
The school library project started in 2015 by the board of Circle of Friends, school administration and school management committee working on the realization of the project.
Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland, provide €30.000 about D1.680.000.00, while Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) agreed to provide D500.000, 00.
Holger Schneider, chairman Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland was accompanied to Gambia by her secretary Dr. Eberhard Erbsloh, Mrs. Kage and her daughter Daniela, Mr. And Mrs. Killian, Mrs. Lay, Mr. and Mrs. Manow, Dr. Stelthove-Fend, Mrs. Elsen-Wubbena and her husband Mr Wubbena (committee member).
The group also donated educational materials to the school namely, chalks, blackboards, books, photocopier, and footballs.
Dr. Eberhard Erbsloh, also purchase 1350 English, Mathematics and Agriculture textbooks for general science for all students this year.
Holger Schneider, Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland, explained that they wanted to open the new building of the school library and hand it over for its intended purpose.
He added: “We have worked a total of hundred hours on the realization of this project and we were confident that we could start the building in January 2018.
In 2017, we submitted the documents to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), to which we wanted to apply for funding for this new building”
According to him, the processing of their application was delayed for months by the ministry, with no result and up to date no decision had been made since 2018.
He added that also in 2018 their application was postponed again, with that result in 2019 no funding was receive from ministry.
He noted that with the approval of the School management committee and the school management, they withdrew the application from the German ministry at the end of 2018 so that they could start building the new library this year.
He further said for the project to be implemented the group and reached an agreement on the construction of school library over the past few days, adding that they are hoping to sign this agreement before returning to Germany.
“Even though the complete construction funds is not yet available, all partners hope to complete the library in 2020. But for this we still need financial support here in Sukuta and also in Moormerland,” he noted.
He appeal to the peoples of Sukuta and the surrounding villages and also those in Moormermerland to support with small and large donations for the remaining financing of the library project,.
“We are optimistic that we will succeed,”, he pointed out.
“Here we are today we will receive some more donation from Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland as is a charity that has come to complement government efforts in advancing education,” said Haddy Sosseh, Principal of Sukuta Upper and Senior Secondary school
She recalled that the charity has been in existence since 1988, and they have been contributing significantly toward the development of the school.
“Today they have come again with a lot of donations, so they contributed a lot in the school building blocks, hall, painting and the library,” she pointed out.
She disclosed construction of the new library worth D3 million and when completed it will be state of the art library in the country.
Saikou Fatty, Chairman of Sukuta Upper and Senior Secondary school calls for all hand on deck for the realization of the project.
He advised the students to fastening their belts read their books and make best use of the conducive environment available.
He commended Circle of Friends Sukuta-Moormerland for their contributions toward the school development.
