One commercial driver was reportedly shot at a military checkpoint in Kanilai village in The West Coast Region of The Gambia on Sunday for allegedly refused to stop his vehicle for inspection.
The driver, Ismaila Tamba, was said to have sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to Bwiam Hospital before transferred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul.
Tamba is a native of Kanilai and a former soldier of the Gambia Armed Forces.
Major Lamin Sanyang, spokesman for the Gambia Armed Forces told The Voice that the incident happened on Sunday evening. He explained that Ismaila Tamba, an ex-soldier who was at the time driving a commercial vehicle over ran the checkpoint and was eventually shot by the army guards while he refused to stop at their order for inspection.
He added that the soldiers are currently at Military Police while investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, Tamba who is currently at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital is gradually recovering.
