Lamin Darboe, executive director for the National Youth Council (NYC) has disclosed that his institution in partnership with German Development Agency (GIZ) is about to recruit youth in various skills training in the country.
Mr. Darboe remarks this in a press briefing concerning the current development in the youth council; held at NaNA conference hall, adding this partnership is extended to different skills training institutions across the state.
“This skills training goes to the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI), President International Award (PIA), Ida’s Idea Fashion and Design Institution, Chamen Skill Training Institute and Sterling Consortium,” he noted.
These two institutions want to train youth on Solar and satellite Installation, hair dressing, block laying and concrete, tiling, small engine repair, garment making among others skills.
The youth leader further affirmed that: “GIZ fully funded this initiative and offered it to Greater Banjul Area, Lower River and Upper River Regions. Any Gambian from these regions within the age of 15 years to 35years can apply,”
Meanwhile, he revealed that applicants must have junior secondary school leaving certificate in order to be qualify for the training, adding returnee migrants’ particularly female ones are highly encouraged to apply for the training.
“The application forms are available at the NYC office as well as the offices of the aforementioned skills training institutions.”
“Young people who want to train on block laying and concrete, tiling, plastering, solar installation and small engine repair can collect forms at GTTI or NYC,” he said.
Those interested in satellite and solar installation also can collect forms at GTMI or NYC. You can go to NYC regional office and governors’ office they can link on this issue, he said.
The 2019 survey conducted by Gambia Bureau of Statistic in partnership with the ministry of health rates unemployment at 41.5%, it is known that many youth embark on migration over the years particularly to Europe and USA due low job opportunities.
However, to Mr. Darboe this programme will avail youth the opportunity to acquire skills that can earn them livelihood also help in curbing irregular migration in this West African tiny nation.
In another development, he affirmed that GIZ also provide a package for youth who are interested in entrepreneurial training or business advisory service, noting this training will be contracted to Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce, GIEPA, NEDI and Start-up Incubator to train a number of youth on entrepreneurial skills or business advisory service.
He said this propose training will help interested youth to have entrepreneurial and business advisory skills to ensure effective service delivery on their various works of life.
nevertheless, Darboe, a renowned youth leader called on all Gambian youth to utilize this opportunity and apply for the skills training to ensure they acquire skills that can help in earning them a living in the near future.
