The Chairman National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) has warned against use of intimidation, slander, provocation and threat in Gambia’s young democracy.
Alhajie Sering Faye made this remarks recently on the first day of 1st phase of the country wide sensitization on Democracy, Political Pluralism, Tolerance and Civic Rights and Duties in Upper Saloum District of Central River Region north
The awareness sensitization is sponsors by the United Democracy Fund (UNDEF) while National Council for Civic Education and the Association of Non-Governmental Organization (TANGO) are the implementation partners.
The sensitization kick-off in CRR north and the theme for the sensitization is: “Strengthening Human Rights and Good Government in The Gambia”.
According to Faye, the principle of equality also requires not only that people’s interest should be attended to equally by government policy, but their views should also equally count.
“We should remember that democracy is enshrined in the equality of all citizens and it does not recognize the division of citizens into majority and minority ethnic groups, religions and other status,” NCCE boss explained to Upper Saloum communities.
He told the Upper Saloum communities that it is the duty of every citizen to recognize each other’s sovereignty and live together as brothers and sisters.
Central River Region deputy Governor Omar Sey commended UNDEF,
Governor Sey explained to Upper Saloum Communities that the synergy is not about politics but instead it is an awareness sensitization gear toward educating Gambian population on what democracy is all about, political pluralism, civic rights and duties among others.
“The people of Upper Saloum and CRR in general welcomed the idea and let me equally called on the Upper Saloum communities and CRR communities in particular to be law abiding at all times,” Governor Sey urged.
Other speakers at forum were the chairman, Kuntaur Area Council, Saikou Jawara, chief of Upper Saloum, Demba Sey, representative of the executive director TANGO, Musa Sawo and alkalo of Panchang village, Hasoum Ceesay.
