Kemo Bojang, nominated Youth Councillor at the Kanifing Municipal Council has urged the Inspector General of Police to release the detained youths on bail as they have already been charged hence it is a bail able offences.
On Saturday, Police arrested ten youths suspected of taking part in July, 24 2019 mass protest in Serrekunda in protest of a death of Ousman Darboe. The protesters alleged that the 33-year-old businessman died as a result of alleged police brutality.
Councillor Bojang stated that a group of young people were arrested on the 17th of August, 2019 after taking part in the protest of the death of Ousman Darboe who was detained by the Anti-Crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force and died shortly after his release on the 24th July, 2019 which has sparked demonstrations in some areas of the Greater Banjul Area.
“I call on the Police to release the detainees on bail as their charged for bail able offences. I still have faith in the justice system of the Gambia and optimistic that this case will be handled in pure fairness and in accordance with the rule of law without the interference of any other institution,” KMC youth representative urged.
