The University of the Gambia Faraba Banta campus that began construction since 2010 is now scheduled for completion in 2021, with five major financing bodies boosting government efforts towards this realization.
President Barrow this morning received in audience representatives from OPEC, BADEA, Islamic development Bank, Kuwait Fund and the Saudi Fund to discuss outcomes of the two-day high level meeting convened by the Ministry of Higher Education since Monday.
Minister Badara Joof said the total package of the funding package had been $54million when it was signed in 2010. However, the construction of the modern, state of the art campus comprising six faculties and other facilities could not be completed due to several reasons.
Lot 1, which is $37million, is already secured and based on its success, the donours will provide another loan facility for the realisation of Lot 2.
The project that is being implemented by the Indian Infrastructure giants, Shapoorji Pallonji, is expected to register a substantial amount of progress by end of this month, which will trigger in the financing application of Lot 2.
Now, the Barrow government is focused on fast-tracking the construction works for the completion within two years. Its completion is expected to greatly enhance the conducive learning environment needed for the students and staff members of this university.
