Minister Agriculture promises government commitment to not crediting farmers’ groundnut

Minister of agriculture has promised in assurance of government commitment to buying farmers groundnuts without taking any loan this year.

Amie Fabureh made the promised while speaking at a meeting presided by president Adama Barrow in Kaur adding that: “we don’t want take your groundnuts in credit this year, want to buy your groundnuts in cash and carry and come December we will announce the price of groundnut for you.”

She promised government support to the farming communities after collating its finding on the level of this year’s harvest, adding her office has been receiving reports that due to delay in rain fall this year has caused slide poor harvest.

Agriculture being the backbone of Gambia’s economy as it contributes more than 50 percent to domestic revenue, yet farming population continued to live in abject poverty.

Tears of some farmers couldn’t be wiped off for years now as they complaint of not benefitting reaps of their farm growing after months toiling.

Recently, farmers have been calling on government support adding government should supply them with farming crops like seedlings, and fertiliser and farming materials on time in order to develop agriculture in the country to register food self-sufficient in the country.
