Thousands of Gambia paid their last prayers to veteran journalist and broadcaster Sarjo Barrow, who died on Sunday at his home in Brusubi at the age of 66 following long ill health.
Sarjo Barrow was laid to rest on Monday afternoon. He started his journalism career in 1979 with Gambia Radio and Television Services.
Mourners included cabinet ministers, representatives of the Supreme Islamic Council, journalists, relatives, friends and compatriots in the media. Many of the mourners described the veteran journalists as a gem in this presentation of news in the local dialect of Mandinka, arguing that such a lost will be take time to recuperate among the teeming Mandinka news presenters.
“Sarjo is well known as an outstanding broadcaster and public announcer whose voice has delivered news to people acrossthe Gambia and beyond for decades,” GRTS TV wrotes on his Facebook Page.
“We are saddened about the demise of our Gambian veteran journalist Alhagie Sarjo Barrow. May Allah (S.A.W) have mercy on him and grant him Jannah,” UDP Media and TV quoted saying.
Barrow PROG, Official Facebook Page of Gambian President Adama Barrow said it has learnt the demise of Sarjo Barrow with shock, describing him as a phenomenal son of the land who served the national broadcaster for 30 years.
“Mr. Barrow is a patriot whose legacy should serve as an example and inspiration to us all. On behalf of my family and the government, I extend condolence to his family and fans. I pray for his soul to rest in peace,” President Barrow said on his Facebook Page.
