Lawyer Darboe Frowns at Gambia’s Prosecuting Myanmar At ICC

Lawyer Yankuba Darboe, senior executive member of 3years Jotna has express his disappointment over the government of The Gambia prosecuting  Rohengha Muslims at the International Criminal Court against the government of Myanmar.

Last month, The Gambia government instituted legal sued filed at the International Criminal Court against the government of Myanmar.

In his opinion, a government such as The Gambia government that dined it citizens’ rights to civil liberties and association have no ground for that country to sue Myanmar over the fate of minority Muslims.

Lawyer Darboe, made this statement at OB Semega Janneh Hall, where Operation Three Years Jotna movement were denied entry for their planned fundraising program.

Officials of the Paramilitary Police blocked the movement from holding its fundraising activity to the dismay of many attendees.

“Every reasonable Gambian knows that this is a persecution, a classic example of it and this is what is happening right here in The Gambia. The very country that is taking Myanmar and other countries to the International Criminal Court (ICC) claiming that those countries have violated the human rights of their people, that is the same government that is doing the same thing to its citizens,” Darboe claimed.

He added: “Gambia Government is doing the same thing as Myanmar simply because it’s citizens has dissenting views, they have a view that is not favourable to the President because they are holding the President accountable to his own pledge, promise and agreement that he made to The Gambians.”

Darboe said the President seek for a mandate of three years, he was given and now the people are demanding for him to honour that mandate and he is just blatantly trying to suppress their views, trying to oppress their opinion, trying to suppress that valid and genuine request from The Gambians.
