Mariama Jammeh, National Coordinator, Peace and Stability, The Gambia has strongly defended the participation of her organization’s members in the national solidary march organized by ‘Gambia for Five Years’ in collaboration with Peace and Stability, The Gambia, revealing that defending the Constitution of the country is a business for every patriotic Gambian.
Madam Jammeh was speaking at the peaceful solidary march where her organization and Gambia for Five Years mobilized thousands of Gambians to rally support in the upholding of the Constitution that will allow President Adama Barrow to stay in power till 2020.
“We are here to protest in defense of the constitution that is under threat as a result of the activities of ‘Three Years Jotna’, we thought that as patriotic Gambians it is our duty to manifest our support of the constitution that is sacrosanct,” said the National Coordinator, Peace and Stability, The Gambia.
Madam Jammeh, who was overwhelm with the turnout registered by women, said she is not surprise with the participation of women in the solidary march, disclosing that women have been motivated by the need to maintain the peace and stability of the country and cannot afford to be left behind in such solidary march.
“Am not surprised that many women turn up for this solidary march because in times of difficulties and chaos women endue the heaviest toll. Women of The Gambia are not fools and they know why they have to fight tooth and nail for the respect of the Constitution which is the only tool that can guarantee us with the peace and stability we all cherish and this is exactly the reason why they show-up massively,” Madam Jammeh pointed out.
She added: “The constitution said the President should serve for five years, if you are out to call him to step-down before that time you are calling for the breach of the constitution. We are calling on the President to honor the dictates of the constitution and serve the country for five years which we voted for and the President also sworn to serve for five years.”
According to her, any attempt by the President to yield to the demands of few disgruntle few will tantamount to betrayal, adding that patriotic Gambian women will not rest on their laurels to witness such a betrayal from the highest office that is expected to guarantee, protect and defend the constitution.
She calls on every Gambian to be defenders of the constitution at all cost especially when it comes under threat, adding that attempt to subvert the constitution is a crime against The Gambia and her citizens. She said such act or actions can be best describe as an act of treason which Gambians should desist from in the national quest to maintaining peace and stability of the country on which her organization is anchored on.
