Chiefs challenge farmers to prioritise small ruminant project

 

Chiefs of Sandu and Jimara have challenged farmers to take ownership of small ruminant enhancement production projects.

They said the project would help them to address their concerns and challenges especially in rearing livestock for productivity.

Jum Bah chief of Sandu said: “this project is meant and purely funded to address the concern and challenges of farmers particularly in term of rearing of small ruminants and boost production and productivity of our small ruminants.”

He added that: “with all those challenges he has been rearing small animals with less support from government but thank God today, livestock have been provided with one of the biggest projects to benefit themselves.”

According to him, in the next two years to come farmers will be able to sustain themselves through the project., adding the project also aimed discouraging livestock importation.

Alhagi Kanimang Janneh chief of  Jimara district commended the government partnership with Islamic Development Bank for ensuring coming up with the project, adding “ the project has come at the right time and it was long overdue  in the sense that the livestock were neglected in the past but with the intervention of this project surely importation of small ruminants will be the thing of the past.”

He described the project as a golden opportunity saying because this project is here to address our livestock challenges.

Farmers need to have access to the finance through guarantee. He also said any one taking money by loan should deposit a guarantee, or a person who will guarantee you, he said.
