Jammeh must Face Justice—Chairman Victims Center

Sheriff Kijera, Chairman of Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violation (GCVHRV) has revealed that former President Yahya Jammeh must face justice for crimes against his own people.

He made this statement yesterday on the heels of the demonstration conducted by supporters of former President Yahya Jammeh demanding for his return from exile in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

“Jammeh must face justice, Jammeh must answer to all the allegations hanging around his neck, the testimonies from the TRRC are evidences that cannot go unpunished,” Kijera disclosed.

According to him, the decision to grant permit to the APRC Party is not the decision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mamud Jobe but rather from President Adama Barrow, stressing that this decision is politically motivated meant to draw favours and supports from the APRC Party.

“I think the decision of granting APRC a permit is more of a political decision than the decision coming from the IGP because until 6/7pm APRC were not issued with a permit, am sure there were some political lobbying”, Victims Center boss alleged.

He said victims of the ex-president are caught very disappointed with the decision of Adama Barrow and his government to grant permit to the APRC, adding that treating someone who committed heinous crime with a red-carpet welcome is equivalent to a slap on the faces of the victims.

“The position of the President is very clear, he want to prolong his stay, he want to perpetuate himself to power, he want to contest the next election so he will do anything by any means necessary to get the support of the APRC or to go into an alliance with the party in order to achieve his dreams,” Kijera revealed.

He added: “We are calling on all the victims and the general populace to join us on our protest to bring Jammeh to justice slated for Thursday 23rd January, 2020. Victims need closure to their case and it will be unjust on their part for Jammeh to go free.”
