A new organization called Paediatric Association of The Gambia (PATG) was recently launched. The launching took place Saturday at Laico Atlantic Hotel, Banjul.
Among other aims of the association is to foster the health and developmental needs of children in the form of advocacy, public education, research, innovation and training.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Adama Sallah, president of the Association outlined objectives of the association, which is to draw the attention of the Government and the people of The Gambia to the condition which constitutes a threat to the life and health of children, and also to co-operate with national regional and international bodies with similar interests.
According to him vital relationship of the health of the mother, and the wellbeing and development of the child, should be recognized by all. “Especially those in power should bring to force in every health agenda”, he added
Dr Sallah went further, “we need to recognize that the solutions of some of the major problems of maternal and child health are beyond the scope. For this reason there should be increased need for advocacy which should be well cultivated in our profession.”
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Health Dr Mustapha Bittaye said the association will advocate for children, pregnant women and women in general.
Minister Bittaye assured them of the government support as their responsibilities are known to the authorities especially their advocacy for the welfare of the health workers.
Honorable Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul made it clear to the association that there is no greater national priority than health and education, “especially when it comes to meet the development needs of children.”
In her capacity as Mayor of Banjul, she said she has worked tirelessly to advocate for capacity building in all sectors, “especially the health sector and Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital was not left behind.”
She stated that the initiative of the inaugurated association is art of care for children from birth to adolescence with emphasis on the physical growth, mental, emotional and psycho-social development.
Hon Halifa Sallah, National Assembly Member expressed that the assoiation is dealing with the foundation of human raise and human society.
“Looking at your association, one most emphasize that you have started in the right way by connecting all those elements that make child different.” While Dr Uduak Okomo applauded the association as it requires commitment from its members and support, dedication from relevant stakeholders.
