By Yusupha Jobe

The Golden Lead Fishmeal Factory in Gunjur has been alleged of committing unlawful acts by forgery and providing unreliable health certificate to the Government of Japan, a document made available to The Voice Newspaper.

Amadou Scattered Janneh, a human right activist and a native of Gunjur in his reaction said “We are going on the offensive. We are cannot keep complaining about how fish meal factories contaminate our environment and deplete our meager resources without doing anything.”

The company is recently accused of presenting a fraudulent health certificate purportedly issued by a Gambian food quality inspector who is believed to have live in China since 2016 to authorities in Japan in order to gain market access in the country.

“The Japan’s Agriculture and fisheries ministry then contacted the Gambia’s food and safety quality authority, only to discover that the document was faked. The Gambia government, through its various agencies, is very much aware of this. The amount of evidence we have may be a factor in attempts to drag the civil suit filed against Golden Lead Factory,” he said.

He added that the company will continuously be monitored by him in order to reveal their activity that goes against the environment.

“We will make sure that the fish meal factory takes a legal step and respect the existence of our natural environment, “he said.

Golden Lead Company was accused of environmental damages by releasing chemical toxic waste in the ocean and other water bodies of the community.
