Minister of Defence Sheikh Omar Faye has commended President and Commander – in- Chief The Gambia Army Forces Adama Barrow for establishing the country National security policy after 55years independence.
He also disclosed that other polices such as Defence, Immigration and Police will be establish soon, noting that all are toward maintenance of peace and stability in the country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Saturday, he urged that security should be everybody business, adding that without a comprehensive national security system in put in place, and “there will be no meaningful development.”
Minister Faye urged Gambians to embrace national security policy for development, peace, respect for human rights, rule of law and dignity.
According to him, security sector reform is a process which seeks to develop and remain relevant and is a necessary path which should be followed and not an accusation or proof of failure
He further said on-going security sector reform process is meant to restructure the entire security sector and not also prevent in house restructuring.
He revealed that various assessment reports calls for urgent need to restructure the GAF, adding that the ministry of defence has taking some step of restructuring before the final production of the documents such as the National Security Strategy , defence policy and military strategy that will regulate the restructuring.
He pointed out that the ministry of defence is responsible for overall guidelines for national defence, supervising the activities of the Armed Forces and implementing defence policies and strategies, adding that the ministry should therefore lead every restructuring effort in the GAF.
