The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission on Tuesday advised consumers of a rule that gives them right that they can return goods bought after 24 hours.
GCCPC disclosed this during an organized press conference that aimed to create awareness among the general public (consumer) by the law to redress their consumer rights abuse/breaches, complaining to the commission and consumer Protection Tribunal.
Manyima Bojang, Director of Legal and Enforcement Department said: “consumers should not be fooled by the hoax that after 24 hours a good bought or used cannot be returned or shown declassification.”This is not true and not in line with the provision of the consumer protection Act 2014,” she stated.
She said that the nature of complaint received by the commission is classified into three main areas, which are false or abusive advertisement, defective goods and unfair trade practices.
“Upon receipt of consumer complaints, the Consumer Protection Officer vets to know whether the complaint brought to the commission raises a consumer claim or not, if does, the consumer’s consent is sought on whether he or she wishes the commission to mediate the claim with the business concerned,” she said.
Amadou Ceesay, Executive Secretary of GCCPC, said “We are here today to equip the media with the role and functions of the GCCPC, we want you to understand what we do, how we do it and why the media.”
He said that competition advocacy is one of the main pillars of modern-day competition law which aims to create, expand and strengthening awareness of competition and consumer protection in the market.
“We believe that media practitioners have a critical role to play to ensure that the benefits of competition/consumer protection accrue to the consumers by keeping them informed,” he said.
