Local Gov’t Top Official Urges Councils to Show Extra Commitment to Work

By Landing Colley

Director of Ministry of Local Government and Land has urged councils to change attitude to work and show extra commitment.

Fatou Gibba was speaking during a meeting with National Assembly select committee on Local Government on Wednesday saying: “some elected council came in 2018 but some where there from 2015, 2016 and all this period they are asking for the financial statement as the CEO, director of finance is all present.”

“They should be the custodian of the funds in and out and all the documentation necessary to enable them to have a credible financial statement to present,” she said.

According to her, it is an embarrassment to the local government including the ministry for calling them about the inability to present the financial statement due to un-timing recording of transection, lack of record and the excuse they are given out saying they were not in the office should not be done.

She said: “Local government is not one family business is a public office that belongs to the country at large therefore they should handle matters as   local government in the public offices and ensure that they account for every dalasi that the taxes payers are paying to the area council.”

She urged them to work together as the ministry of land and regional government cannot perform its function without the local government authorities and equally the council cannot succeed in what they do with the support of the ministry.
