Old Yundum Lawmaker Launches Surveillance on ‘Unscrupulous’ Business Owners over Price Hiking

The Old Yundum National Assembly Member has launched a survey team to start observing the unscrupulous business owners within his constituency who are hiking prices of basic commodities including food because of the current pandemic spreading across the world.

On Tuesday in a joint press release from Ministries of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment and Justice urged business owners to desist from unnecessary hiking prices of food and essential commodities in the country. He also warned that any business owners found culpable in dubious activity will be dealt with by the law courts.

Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay who is very much worried about the price hiking ongoing among people said “I have received more than five calls from members of my constituent complaining about increment in prices of basic commodities and other essential goods within the constituency.”

He continued that “I have been duly informed that this move was orchestrated by Mauritanian businessmen within the constituency and this increment of prices will not happen here in my constituency,” he stated.

He added that “desperate time needs desperate measures and for that been the case the office of the MP will not seat on its laurels and see unscrupulous businessmen spoiling the market thus increasing the hardship of the people at this crucial time the nation undergoes.”

According to him, his office will tour the constituency to ascertain whether business owners are increasing prices of the basic commodities and essential goods.

“Whoever dares to increase prices different from actual price tag in Old Yundum Constituency, such sellers will be handed over to the police immediately for action to be taken. Price hiking and hoarding will not be condoned in this constituency,” he warned.

He however urged business owners within his constituency to abide by the price tag on basic commodities and essential goods, saying increasing prices of goods and services during this trying time is the most insensible thing any businessmen can do.

He therefore appealed to all members of the constituency to report any increment on prices of goods and services to the office of the MP or at the nearest police station for immediate action.
