National Assembly Member for Banjul South has Thursday tabled a motion telling fellow lawmakers to consider the plights of poor vulnerable and needy Gambians as they seek measures in curbing the killer virus.

Hon Fatoumata Touma Njai made the call following the Minister of Justice, Honorable Minister Abubacarr Tambadou who had tabled a Bill before the house to seek an extension of the Public Health Emergency to 90 days as an attempt to prevent spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Debate over the motion was however adjourned to Friday as lawmakers referred it to the National Assembly Human Rights Committee for further scrutiny and consideration.

“I think the only thing that this august assembly should think of right now is how to consider the plights of the poor, vulnerable and needy Gambian citizens,” Hon. Touma Njie said.

She made it cleared that she brought the motion before for the house only to consider detail [of] curbing the COVID-19.

Earlier, she said “Madam speaker, I beg your indulgence and bring a motion based on section 53 of our Standing Orders that this august assembly only consider issues that would be on the COVID-19 and not adopt this agenda.”
