Authorities assure Gambians of Enough Food Stock amid Covid-19 Pandemi

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment has reassured the populace of available and enough food stock in the country. The available food stock level can go up to four months without fear of any basic food shortage as covid-19 continues.

Lamin Dampha, in a statement made over the weekend on Kerr Fatou TVsaid “The current stock level on basic food commodity we are having at the moment can last for a period of 4 months from April to July that can even go beyond the period looking at the number of basic food stock level expected to come into the country.”

He noted that the biggest threat government is facing at the moment is the illegal smuggling of certain basic food commodities outside the country. This, he assured that police are doing their best to stop such illegal smuggling of basic food commodities outside the country.

He disclosed that the government of The Gambia is currently working with partners to develop necessary measures to provide basic food relief packages to vulnerable families including businesses affected with the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

“As at the moment we are doing some rapid assessment with our partners and also documenting businesses affected with coronavirus pandemic to see how best to provide them with a relief package.

“So very soon government will pronounce a relief package on businesses and vulnerable families to cope with the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic. There a lot of things that government is working on to allow vulnerable families and businesses to cope with during this COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
