COVID 19: Senegalese Ambassador Denies Rumour of Money Relief Package

The Senegalese Ambassador to The Gambia has denied the circulated rumour that the Emabassy has dished out some amount of cash between D5,000 and D10,000 to her citizens residing in The Gambia as part of coronavirus pandemic relief package from the government of Senegal.

Ambassador Basirou Sene, speaking at the press briefing held on Thursday disclosed that Senegalese Embassies across West African countries will each receive 10 million CFA for their nationals that lost their parents to coronavirus pandemic for their burial. Also, for those that were on transit to Senegal but got stuck in The Gambia and other countries in the region do to border shutdown.

He went further that the Embassy is yet to receive any money from Dakar for distribution in The Gambia.

Under the leadership of president Macky Sall, the government of Senegal has allocated 12 Billion CFA for its diaspora citizens as a relief package for the fight against COVID-19,” he announced.

However he added that his office has received over 10,000 applications from Senegalese nationals residing in the Gambia “which creates inconvenience for distribution to those that supposed to benefit from the package.”

He continued that “Under the leadership of president Macky Sall, the government Senegal has allocated 12 Billion CFA for its diaspora citizens as a relief package for the fight against COVID-19,” he announced.

He therefore urged journalists to avoid spreading baseless stories that are complex during this trying time as it may lead to social distress.
