The Vice President Dr Isatou Touray has lamented on Gambian youths’ attitude towards some works in the country citing the offloading of the government relief food package meant for distribution to the citizens amidst of the covid-19 as example.
Speaking at the launching of the government’ Covid-19 food aid program, the Vice President said labour work is a pay job which was done by only foreigners, whiles young people of this country complain of unemployment.
VP Touray said labour workers to offload the items “was a challenge; you will find out that most of the young people who are offloading and uploading the packages are not Gambians, and this is a bitter experience that I have seen.”
As a Vice President, she said it is always sadden she listen to the radio and TV and hears young people complaining about unemployment, noting that “for the last two, three days we have been looking for labourers to offload the items and get paid,” she stressed.
Dr Touray further said all the labourers will be paid, but saddens her for not seeing youths of the Gambia taking the opportunity because all the people uploading and offloading the items were Guineans, Malians, Sénégalaise, Nigérians and other nationalities.
“It is a big surprise to say that there is no job. This is a great job, the amount of work these people are going to do here, they are going to earn a lot of money,” she said.
However, the vice president Dr Isatou Touray who was on the ground to supervise the work reiterated to the reporters that “labour is a challenge after paucity of labourers, we ensured the launch of the government’s coronavirus food aid program would have to wait until Sunday (yesterday).”
President Adama Barrow was set to launch his government’s Covid-19 food aid initiative which will see the government distribute tens of thousands of bags of rice and sugar to Gambians.
The launch of the food items suffered a setback on Saturday after all the rice and sugar couldn’t make it to the McCarthy Square, were the ceremony was to take place.
