IQRA-Gambia project that seeks to restoring dignity to the millions of disabled people in developing countries has given foodstuff to 10 persons with physically challenged amid Covid-19 and the Holy month of Ramadan.
The donated items include bags of rice, sugar, onions and cooking oil.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Modou Lamin Bah, public relations officer of Banjul City Council, said: “IRQA has been providing essential medical support and aid to thousands of disabled children and adults around the world who are unable to afford it.”
He added that: “sometimes ago the same initiative was done in the Gambia by providing wheel chairs and crutches for children and adults that are physically challenged, and here they are again understanding the difficult situation we are facing in this world pandemic.
Mr. Omar Touray, deputy Major of Banjul city council, described the help as essential and that it will help the beneficiary a lot.
“I hope this initiative continues to support physically challenged in the Gambia more especially in this difficult time the world is,” he said.
Amadou Jallow, coordinator of the physically challenged, said the support is timely and valuable more especially in this difficult time of COVID-19, adding that 95% of the physically challenged make their earning and living through street begging.
He said: “the physically challenge persons are dearly in need of help, normally I use to say that the physically challenge living in the Gambia is normally called the forgotten and regardless group.”
He commended IRQA protect and BCC for their wonderful support saying the initiative is very crucial.
Oustass Bah, on behalf of the people of Banjul, also commended IQRA international and Banjul City Council for their wonderful gesture and called on other philanthropists to do the same by helping the physical challenged.
