Jatta Sanyang, a native of Berending village in Kombo South is alleged to have caused a serious actual bodily harm to a police officer stationed at Gunjur Police Station.
The incident according to the source happened Tuesday, 4th May, 2020 following report of a land case made at the police station by Abdou Touray, a native of Gunjur. The complaint went to inspect his land but was approached by Jatta Sanyang and some men who warned him to stay away from the land and the area claiming that the land and the area belongs to him.
The communities of Gunjur and Berending in 2018 had a clash over the same land and it resulted into the demise of one Buba Jammeh a native of Gunjur including other people from both the two communities who had suffered injuries before the intervention of military officers that came to resolve the matter between the two villages.
The Spokesperson of the Gambia Police Force ASP Lamin Njie in an interview with The Voice confirmed the incident stating the injured police officer was attacked with a cutlass following his attempt to investigate the reported land case brought to the station by Abdou Touray.
“Our officer was attacked and seriously injured with a cutlass by one Jatta Sanyang from Berending village after when the officer went to the said land to find out what is the matter.” He added that after he has injured the police officer the alleged person, Jatta Sanyang went hiding.
“The police are still investigating the matter and manhunt for the accused person is still on. We are very much serious with the welfare of our men in uniform and the safety of this nation. So the police will not relent to ensure full security of the country,” he stated.
ASP Njie therefore appealed to the public to be vigilant and help the police in their search to arrest the alleged individual and brought him to face justice.
