A Gunjur ward councilor has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) to help provide mobility to Gunjur Police Station to enable them address rise in burglary within the community.
In an open letter written to the IGP Alagie Mamour Jobe, Momodou Charreh Gibb wrote: “I wish to draw your attention to the situation at the Gunjur Police Station. Gunjur Police are covering a community that is rapidly growing as a direct result of the activities at the fish landing site.
The station is doing a great job but their work is hampered by lack of service vehicle. The pick-up vehicle is not usable unless over ninety thousand dalasi is spends to repair it.”
He said materials worth over D300,000 have been stolen in a compound as a result of burglary.
According to him, with the high rate of theft cases and organized crimes the station officers could not efficiently deal with stopping the suspected theft cases and crimes without a good service mobility system.
“It is true that the station officers are doing everything possible to stop suspected crimes and theft cases in the community. But again, this will be difficult if there is no service vehicle for the officers. I appeal to you for an urgent intervention. The lack of service car is causing huge burden on the community especially the victims of the crime,” he added.
The government of the Gambia, he said, has all obligations to protect the lives and properties of the citizens stating that taxpayers’ money should not be used without having any impact on their livelihoods and security.
“The government of the Gambia owes the taxpayers a responsibility including effective and efficient police coverage. Security of a nation as well our communities is paramount. I therefore seek your indulgence and understanding to consider the plight of our police stations,” he urged.
