Bakary Sanyang has finally secured the backing of lawmakers as the country’s new ombudsman.
His appointment come months after same lawmakers turned down Babucarr A Suwareh who was initially nominated for the job by President Adama Barrow.
The National Assembly Members said Sanyang’s appointment, according to Section 164 (1) of the 1997, limit the National Assembly Members from rejecting the second nominee for the Ombudsman.
Mr Sanyang’s appointment was tabled in early April before the National Assembly members and it went through scrutiny,
Hon. Kebba K. Barrow, member of the Select Public Appointment Standing Committee said “I raise the motion for consideration and approval of the report of the Public Appointment Standing Committee on the confirmation of the appointment of Mr. Bakary Sanyang as Ombudsman accordance with section 164 (1) of the 1997 Constitution.”
In another development, the Minister of Defense tabled a motion seeking appointment of Alhagi Momodou Ndow-Njie and Mr Yuspha Babacarr Dibba.
He said the member of the Gambia Armed Forces Council in accordance with section 189 (1)g of the 1997 Constitution and Section 13 (1)g of the Gambia Armed Forces Act, but the motion was later referred to the Public Appointment Committee Select for Security.
