Kebba Ceesay, founder and leader for movement call Operation No Tribal Insult (ONTI) movement has said that tribal insults can breach the peace and stability of the country.
Mr Ceesay was speaking to The Voice in an exclusive interview saying “there is series of tribal segregations in the country that could affect the peace and stability in the country.”
“I am seeing Gambians are not coming together now because they are in fact scared one another. Our forefathers united but now the separation is coming because some politicians are separating us,” he said.
He added: “This is very dangerous in our society. This is what happened in Rwanda and I am seeing a similar thing is coming to The Gambia now. So, I want this to be stopped,” he noted.
The anti-tribalism campaigner repeated that tribal sentiment can cause unimaginable conflict in the country; therefore, he said measures should be put in place to address the tribal insult in the nation.
He said as long as politics is concerning every Gambians can have a political opinion and choice but was quick to add that political difference should not be based on tribal difference, adding that the public should not allow politics to divide them.
He said that there is need for government enacts a law that will be used to punish anyone liable for tribal insult.
“If Gambian in abroad insults a particular tribe in the country his or her home should be seized. And if the person returns home, he or she should be jailed for two years. If this happens tribal insult will be ended in the country,” he said.
He called on all and sundry, especially the political leaders to unanimously combat tribal sentiments in order to maintain peace and harmony that Gambians are known for.
“Let’s stop fighting one another and work towards the development of our motherland,” the anti-tribalism activist concluded.
