NHRC summits report to NAM select committee

The National Human Rights Commission on Friday submitted its annual activity report of the 2019 to National Assembly select committee on human rights and constitutional matters.

The committee is empowered under Section 33 of the National Human Rights Commission for the commission to summit its annual report to the parliament at every end of year.

Emmanuel Joof Chairperson NHRC said: “the 2019 was a challenge and at the same time interesting for the commission despite our newest and establishing commission from start, the commissioners and staff demonstrated a grate commitment to go this far.”

“The commission was able to achieve in partnership with national and international institution through strategies which includes awareness creation, public education, capacity building, networking and partnership building, advisory role investigating, monitoring, institution straighten and complain handling,” he added.

According to him, they have started the process of individual complain as the act under human right constitution give them the mandate not only to investigate and monitor but also to receive complain. He added that the commission can sit to look at complain and issue decision as they have the power of the high court.

“Our role as the National Human Right commission is to serve every one residing in The Gambia regardless of ethnicity, religion, social status, nationality, political difference gender of any other social status,” he said.

He said to build a culture of human right in the country they anticipate that the national assembly select committee on human right and constitution matters to continue to advocate for the independent of the human right commission.

And Marie Jack Denton chairperson of the select committee commended the NHRC for submitting their annual activity report “the report will be considered, scrutinize by the committee and report to the National Assembly Member for consideration,” she informed.
