Lawmakers have welcomed tabling of two bills by Fatou Kinteh, minister of women, children and social welfare and the bills include- women enterprise fund bill and persons with disabilities bill.
Hon. Billay G. Tunkara, national assembly member for Kantora cited section 28 sub section of the 1997 constitution saying which stated “women shall be accorded full with equal dignity with men and sub section 2 further said women shall have right to equal treatment with men including equal opportunity in political, economic and some activities.”
“This reference is to indicate, to this assembly that, the bill before us is actual the realization of constitution provision that is indicated in the constitution. As a saying goes if you educate women, you educated the entire nation so if we empower women create employment opportunities it means that we are eradicating the issue of poverty,” he said.
He added: “There are lot of women who don’t have the opportunity to secure bank loan due to the over raising interest rate, and this bill has come at the right time which can be able to empower women economically, socially and politically.”
Also speaking, the nominated member, Ndey Yassin, expressed her delight about tabling of the ‘persons with disabilities bill’ saying “today is the day that I consider that person with disabilities are no more excluded in the society.”
She said bills come been tabled before the lawmaking house at the right time adding “we have to make sure that we monitor everything concerning person with disability.”
According to her, they have been going to the radio sensitizing people to know that person with disabilities are part and passel of the society and thank god the day has come now for some people to hear what they want to say.
