A US-based Gambian has urged President Adama Barrow to publicly proclaim his government position on the controversial gay rights issue in the country.
Lamin Chamang Komma, also senior member of The Gambia civil society coalition, call comes amid controversial debate on homosexuality which attracted a storm of condemnation.
It also comes after attempts by the EU representative to promote gay rights in The Gambia.
Speaking to The Voice Newspaper from his US base, Mr Komma said: “It
is prudent that President Barrow address the country on his government’s position regarding gay rights.”
“I belief he must not relinquish his responsible in these crucial times of our country – his
statement could apparently kill the whole debate surrounding the issue once and for all, “he added.
Meanwhile, he said the government should warn the European Union Ambassador to
stay away from Gambian internal matters.
“Why are we not talking about segregation of Muslims in the West? Why are Muslims restricted in the way they practice their religion in the West? These are questions that every genuine Muslim should ask.”
“We expect the EU Ambassador to have the same respect to our Religion and cultural beliefs. Constitutions are written based countries cultures and norms. Therefore, this inhumane behaviour is not part of our culture and we say no to it,” he said.
He however urged the NHRC to focus on issues of human rights that matters must to Gambian people and refrain from calling for the protection of gay.
