Lamin Sanneh, the governor of West Coast Region has presided over a security meeting comprising police officers and Gunjur community elders on crime and its related issues.
It comes amid wide range reports of burglary and stealing within the region especially community of Gunjur.
He said: “It has already become concern to us as regional authorities that crime rates including theft and assault is increasingly happening within the coastal settlements. We know these are communities where major economic activities such as fishing take place thereby encourage the influx of different nationalities.”
He said the Police will have a duty to make sure crime rates and including burglary are drastically reduce to protect the lives and properties of the people saying as people cannot do their business in fear.
“We are committed to protecting the lives and properties of the people. This we will do to prevent crimes and assault on people by proving security for them. The security of these communities will never be taken so lightly. So, we are prepared to give necessary security protection to our people,” he assured.
Momodou Charreh Gibba, Gunjur Ward councillor advised Police officers and other security personnel to join hands in protecting the people of his ward citing various complains he has taken to several government authorities such as the Police regarding the increase in crime rates of the coastal villages.
“I have expressed my concerns to many government heads especially the Police to look into the security issue of coastal communities,” he said.
