Lawmakers have suspended debate on Public Service Pension Bill 2020 due to what they called ‘exclusion of objects and reason of the Bill laid by Vice President before the august assembly.’
Presenting the Bill, Dr. Isatou Touray, said “the current concerned bill which was connected in 1950 contains many references and provision that are no longer applicable to The Gambia of today.”
She said the benefits provided are very low and are generally too low to maintain a reasonable standard of living for the retirees. “The effect of the public service pension Bill is that the pension Act 1950 will be repeal and several new provisions will be introduced,” she explained.
“Those resigning from service under the Act of 1950 were ineligible for any benefit but under the new pension Bill their benefit will be preserve until they attend the voluntary early timing age.
“In case of a missing member or presumption of death, a death benefit to dependence will be pay, and pensioners who are in prison, bankrupt their pension will not be sized but will be paid to beneficial until their status is reverse,” she said.
She said pension and any other benefit which are payable under this Act shall be funded by the government, tax revenue and contribution made by the Public officer employ by the government.
