United Democratic Party’s youth wing has condemned the sacking of the National Youth Council’s acting executive director, Lamin Darboe, and called it illegal.

The group’s condemnation comes shortly after his sacked by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with no clear reasons.

In a letter signed by the party’s youth division president, Kemo Bojang, said: “The move by the government in particular the Ministry of Youths and Sports to terminate the service of the National Executive Director of the Youth council was illegal.

“This is because the letter sent from the Ministry failed to indicate reasons of his service termination as head of the NYC. This is a reminder of the system that we fought against in the 22 years of Yayah Jammeh’s dictatorial regime were powers are abused.”

“The letter did further described the dismay and dissatisfaction of the UDP party’s youth wing regarding the dismissal of the NYC boss Lamin Darboe arguing that as the acclaimed ‘New Gambia’ should not dismiss individual base on their political affiliation.

“In this regard the UDP youth wing wishes to express utter dismay and dissatisfaction in the manner Lamin Darboe’s sacking happened. It is our sincere belief that in the ‘New Gambia’ such disrespect, abuse and disregard for due process of the law should not happen and people must not be sacked for political reasons,” the letter indicated.

“We are standing today in solidarity with Lamin Darboe. The attestation from the youth fraternity since his sacking from the youth office has shown the service, he offered to youth fraternity. I wish to make it clear that the youth wing of UDP will not stand and watch the rights of individuals or groups violated especially within the youth population. We believe young people of the Gambia deserve better and the national youth council which is act of parliament must not be used as a political tool,” it added.
